One of the first up-market housing estate golf courses, with its centenary in 2013, St George’s Hill is a classic combination of undulating holes, naturally fitting into tree-lined fairways, whose seclusion gives a luxurious sense of privacy.  The club offers three loops of 9 – red, blue and green. Colt himself said of the first two that they probably were his best work as a designer, whilst the green course, the tightest of the three, was part of an original second 18, reduced to 9 as a result of  WW2. The cocktail of mostly raised tees and again raised, generally crowned greens connected by undulating, well bunkered, occasionally dog-legged fairways, lined with heather and rough continues to yield the truly strategic course that Colt had envisaged. Occasional penal and heroic moments only add to the variety. The greens are often (more or less subtly) multi-tiered, putting a premium on putting; most are also defended by heather topped bunkers. The course’s main feature remains its strong collection of long par 4s and a testing hand of par 3s. If you like challenging, yet rewarding, inland golf in beautiful surroundings, St George’s Hill is a must.
